Honour Based Abuse (HBA) is a form of abuse committed to protect or defend perceived family or community ‘honour’. It can include other harmful practices such as female and male genital mutilation and spirit possession.
Honour Based Abuse:
- Is usually about the perceived reputation of a family or community.
- Can involve multiple perpetrators, including family members, and members of the community.
- May include controlling behaviour (e.g., restrictions on clothing, social contacts, education/work).
- Might include Forced Marriage, physical/ sexual violence.
- There is no ‘honour’ in this type of abuse.
- Can include threats of violence or disownment
- Includes “Honour killings” -extreme cases where the person is murdered for perceived dishonour and family shame.
HBA is complex and serious and should be dealt with by a trained professional.
If you are concerned that someone you know is experiencing Honour Based Abuse, talk to them in private if it is safe to do so.
DO NOT confront the family, this could escalate their risk.
